El Quetzal is a wonderful Spanish language school. The teachers are amazing and the sense of community is really something special. I would highly recommend El Quetzal to anyone!
Evaluation from hammer:
I definately recommend this school, where I had such a good time during the 8 weeks I stayed in Xela. The school's small and the teachers are very friendly. There's a lot of space to personalize your lessons. Besides grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, the school pays great attention to Guatemalan culture and history.
Evaluation from Yerxa:
I spent a summer studying here so I could challenge my second language university requirement. I had a ton of fun, I learned a lot. It's a great location, a great city, the teachers are really dedicated, and there are a lot of outings and activities. I really recommend this school.
Evaluation from Strideface:
Best school in Xela!
Evaluation from Dmeldon:
I loved this school, I only did a couple of weeks but you feel like your part of their family from day one! My Spanish came on a huge amount helped by the school, the activities and the host family I was with! I think the small size of the school made it a much better environment to learn in! I'll be back to visit.
Evaluation from fxbonneville:
Wonderful experience. I attended El Quetzal in October 2014 for a total of 3 weeks. I was going by on a motorcycle coming from Canada. I could barely speak at the time. I was assigned to a teacher (Fernando) and remained with him for the 3 weeks. I must say that I was not expecting such teaching quality for the price I was paying. Fernando was very professional and dedicated. He was always willing to adapt to whatever I wanted to learn during the day. Within a week, I was giving a 5 minute oral presentation quite comfortably. I cannot say much about the other teachers in the staff, but they all looked qualified and professional. There is a whole bunch of stuff going on every day after class and even during class. I was living in a host family for the whole time and loved my experience. I highly recommend this school and I do not have anything negative to talk about... Happy learning! F-X

Evaluation from BrenHennessy:
I attended this school for 2 months last year and I can safely say its the reason I speak spanish now. From the owners to the teachers to he students themselves everyone works towards helping everyone. The level of teaching in El Quetzal really surprised me in the best way possible. The family that I stayed with were amazing helping me out everyday after school, making me feel like I was apart of their family also. The school itself is nice and small with one on one teaching that is by far the best in Central America let alone Guatemala. We had trips almost everyday to further help with our spanish. The students that were studying there we also great fun and we pushed each other to get better and this all came from the enviroment that is created by the teaching staff there. This school is the best possible school for anyone who is starting from zero spanish to someone who wants to improve the spanish skills they already have. Truly great experience and amazing people working harder every day to make this place the best it can possible be which for me is the best!

Great school, great people, great education and a wonderful experience. I have attended El Quetzal several times. I would not have returned if I were not completely satisfied each time I attended. Based on my experience, I highly recommend El Quetzal Spanish School. I selected Guatemala because it is the least expensive place to study and because the number of schools there creates enough competition to keep the schools good. I selected Quetzaltenango because of the size of the city (not too big or too small) and because it seems to attract serious students instead of tourist. I selected El Quetzal because of its small size, individualized instruction and the good reviews it has received. One of the keys to the good instruction at El Quetzal is Glenda, the owner. She requires each instructor to prepare a lesson plan based on the student's level of knowledge and specific needs. Then she monitors the student's progress. Every instructor I have had at El Quetzal has been personable, knowledgeable and a good teacher. I consider Glenda, her family and my instructors as my friends. Great school in an interesting neighborhood!! You quickly get to know other students and have several opportunities to practice Spanish with all of the instructors. I have studied at 4-5 schools in Guatemala and this one was my favorite!
Evaluation from jxbradey:
I studied via Skype with El Quetzal Spanish School during the months of January and February 2015. I studied 3 hours per day for 5 or 6 weeks. My teacher, Fernando, was an excellent teacher. I am at a fairly advanced Spanish level and Fernando had the knowledge and experience to help take me to the next level. I found the teaching style to be professional, interesting and fun and the teacher was well prepared at all times. I hope to study at their school during my next visit to Quetzaltenango. I highly recommend El Quetzal Spanish school!
Evaluation from JeffreyLam:
I studied Spanish at El Quetzal for 3 weeks in late August 2015 to early September. El Quetzal was a wonderful small school with a family feel. While I was at the school, we had about 4 students at the school, including myself. Classes: I have not been to any other Spanish school, but I would imagine that El Quetzal is geared towards a student who is relatively serious about learning Spanish. The teachers were very flexible and would create an individualized lesson plan for you. My goal was to learn more a little more grammar, since I am trying to test into a higher level of Spanish when I return to my university, but I know many other students focused on building their speaking and listening skills. My teacher was incredibly patient and had a gentle way of correcting all of my Spanish mistakes. Every night, I would be assigned homework. Everyday, we would correct my homework together, go over some new grammar, practice the new tenses I had learned, and of course chat a lot about random things (how our nights were, Guatemalan politics, the healthcare system in Guatemala, current events, etc.). Outside of school: Because of the small school size, we got a lot of individual attention from the teachers outside of the classroom. We could sign up for excursions to near by pueblos/ natural steam baths/ hikes. One of the teachers would always act as a guide/friend and explain everything to us. This was a wonderful time to synthesize the grammar we had learned in class. We would also cook lunch each Thursday, play Spanish games, and watch Spanish films/movies. On top of all of the scheduled activities, it was not uncommon to hang out with the teachers after hours. For example, Glenda, the owner of the school invited all of the students to her daughter's first communion party. Another night, Glenda and the other teachers opened up their house so that one of the students could cook Korean food for them. Another time, one of our teachers showed us the community that his nonprofit works in. As a public health student interested in health systems and medicine, I asked Glenda if she could set up a visit for me to the local medical center, which she promptly scheduled for next week. All of these things were made possible by the small size of the school. Community and homestay family - When I visited Xela, it was a perfect 70 degrees F every day. Everyone in the city was incredibly nice and there were many opportunities to practice my Spanish. I never felt unsafe and would often roam the markets and talk to the store owners. Tip: you should try some of the street food because they have chairs next to their stands and the store owners and other buyers will talk to you. I got the feeling that everyone was genuinely interested in me and that no one was trying to rip me off (unlike other counties I have traveled to). My homestay family was another good addition to my experience in Xela. They provided me a lot of advice about Xela and another means to practice my Spanish. There are also many cafes and restaurants that are great for studying in after class near the school. Overall, my experience in Xela was incredible and I hope to have the opportunity to come back one day!
Evaluation from DelaneyPiper:
This school is both incredibly profession as well as community-orientated. I felt so welcomed by the teachers and learned a lot of spanish as well as the history and culture of Guatemala. My home stay had great food, a friendly atmosphere where I got to practice speaking a lot, and all the accommodations- close location, wi-fi, warm showers. Xela is a tranquil place to learn, and this school definitely enhances the experience. I've also a great deal for the number hours and the quality of the program!
Evaluation from fnmanila:
One of the best parts of my year-long travel was going to this school! Everything about El Quetzal was top quality - the level of professionalism, friendliness and fun with the teaching, the teachers and the activities. I ended up staying for a month instead of two weeks not only because they made learning fun, but they make you feel like part of the family! Such great value for money! Gracias por todos!

I studied here twice, in 2010 and again in 2012, for a little over 4 months in total. It was a truly great experience. A wonderful school, run by wonderful people with excellent teaching skills and hearts of gold. I would absolutely recommend it : )
