The school is located in a very peaceful and friendly environment, the teachers are very nice, and the director and owner takes very good care of the students. I fully recommend this School.
Evaluation from markdago:
We were very happy here and learned tons. The school director Ana is a very able administer and was eager to help us with anything we needed during of our time in Guatemala. Our teachers Brenda and Lesvia were very talented with tons of patience.
Evaluation from jverner:
I spent the month of June 2013 in Antigua, attending Antigua Plaza Spanish School. It was a wonderful experience. Ana, who owns the school, is very friendly and helpful. My teacher Alma was friendly and engaging and an expert Spanish teacher. I learned a lot, but more important, I learned basics so that I can learn more on my own. I carefully checked out the Spanish schools in Antigua before selecting this one. I am so glad I did. I plan to return to Antigua next year - at least for a little while - and will go visit my old school.
Evaluation from Dystopia:
Ana (the owner) offers a full-service experience at Antigua Plaza by providing her students with options for housing (opt for Violeta's house!), connections to and information about travel agencies, a deep knowledge of all the goings-on in Antigua, and, of course, great Spanish teachers. Ana doesn't just know some people in Antigua -- she knows their brothers and uncles and regular customers. If you describe to her a guy that was acting up at the bar you were at the night before, she'll likely know him and tell you whether he's harmless or someone to stay from. This kind of information always comes in handy when you end up staying in Antigua for more than a week (which you should!). The Spanish teachers are really great as well. The atmosphere is informal, but there is a natural progression (of verb tenses, idioms, etc.). To take advantage of the informal nature, I would advise future students to really be to as forthright as possible with your teacher. When you don't understand a concept, just ask until you get it right. (Of course, this should be a given for words you simply didn't understand, but that's a different story). And, try your best to just turn off the thing that inhibits speech. You have to think like a two year-old. When your teacher says something, just repeat it verbatim, to the best of your ability. There's a reason babies do that... because it works! Good luck!
Evaluation from amyamo:
School was set in beautiful surroundings and my teacher Elva was very helpful and I picked up a lot in the week I was there. The accommodation and family I was staying with was fantastic and the food was excellent. Ana the owner was also very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend Antigua Plaza language school. Gracias!!
Evaluation from gillhumm:
Just spent 3 weeks studying at Antigua Plaza and had an awesome time. My teacher Brenda was excellent , had mountains of patience and a great sense of humour (always a help). Ana the owner goes out of her way to help you absolutely anything, I would definitely recommend this school.
Evaluation from katykovic:
Antigua Plaza is the place to go if you want to learn spanish and enjoy your stay in Guatemala. I spent 3 weeks there (May 2013) learning spanish & having fun. Ana, the director, is much more than that. She will help you in all you request (organizing transport, week-ends, activities). My teacher, Esther, is just an amazing friendly motivating teacher. I came with a really basic spanish level and left with all I needed to work 3 months in an orphanage ! Having classes outside in a little garden is great and the atmosphere between the students & teachers was amazing. Regarding the accomodation, I also booked an homestay via Antigua Plaza. The family made me feel home (Violeta Samayoa & family). The food was amazing and healthy. In the same time than me, other students were there. During the meals, we were all trying to speak spanish which was sometimes great moments of laugh. If you plan to learn spanish, do not hesitate to go there !
Evaluation from Vergris:
I have my own accommodations so I can't evaluate them. I really like the director, she is very friendly and helpful. She speaks very good English. The teachers are very professional> I especially like Alma. I have studied Spanish for several years and she is a very good teacher for an intermediate to advanced student. My husband studied with another teacher who speaks English and is very good with beginners. The school has students both young and older students like myself. It is located in a garden.
Evaluation from mbignell:
We had such a wonderful time learning at Antigua Plaza. Ana could not have been more helpful and both Ana and our teachers Brenda and Lesvia were amazing throughout. They prepared a great programme and the method of learning was perfect for us. Spending mornings in the beautiful garden with the hummingbirds was a total luxury. Our teachers even invited us to their family's Christmas procession and really made us feel welcome. I cannot recommend them highly enough and I am already wishing to return for more!
Evaluation from tifferly04:
I had a great month working on my Spanish at Antigua Plaza. Ana, the program director was great, easy to talk to, and very helpful with any questions I had. I loved my teacher Brenda, as she could explain trickier topics very clearly and the class structure was a nice balance between grammar and rules and conversation. Your teacher will greatly inform your experience learning Spanish, but from my observation, all the teachers seemed very competent and were great to speak with. There are not many frills, such as volunteer projects that are associated with the school, but Ana will gladly set you up with one if you are interested. I was overwhelmed by the amount of schools in Antigua, but in the end was glad I chose a school that was more intimate and I would recommend Antigua Plaza!
Evaluation from flowertravel:
I spent 3 weeks in Guatemala preparing for a Spanish teacher position back in the U.S. I would absolutely recommend Antigua Plaza to anyone who would like to learn Spanish in a beautiful environment with very competent and patient teachers. My Spanish teacher at the school, Miriam, was fantastic in teaching both conversation and grammar which was helpful to improve my Spanish by leaps and bounds. The setting doesn't get any better: you are learning outside in the garden surrounded by beautiful birds, flowers and fresh air. The atmosphere of the school is very friendly thanks to the owner Ana. She arranged everything from my lodging with a local family to helping me with my flight. She really made my experience comfortable and she is very thorough and true to her word. So, I would whole-heartedly recommend working with Ana and the teachers at Antigua Plaza.
Evaluation from Raine324:
I cannot Thank you enough Ana, I have had an amazing experience over the last two months learning Spanish at Antigua Plaza. My teacher Aura was a perfect match for me, I thoroughly enjoyed my lessons every day and I learnt very good Spanish during my stay in Antigua. All the teachers at Antigua Plaza are very friendly. Ana placed me with the most fantastic homestay, making my home away for home a fantastic experience. When I return to Antigua I will most definitely like to return and resume studies at this school and with Aura. Muchas Gracias por una buena experiencia!

I`ll miss the people from Antigua with their beautiful smile and specially our host, Ana, who made our stay a wonderful and memorable experience. Thank you Ana for your awesome hospitality!! - Canada
Evaluation from rose123:
For a complete beginner this has been a complete awakening to the Spanish language. As a lone traveller out of her depth, this has been a warm, helpful and fun environment to have kick started my journey. Thank you to Antigua Plaza!!
Evaluation from jjrjensen:
I took lessons for four hours per day for one week at Antigua Plaza. My teacher, Alma, was great. She was always prepared with the lessons and she gave me homework every day. The director of the school, Ana, was extremely helpful. She speaks perfect English and was able to call tourist offices for me to get information on activities that I could do on my own. She also gave me a lot of good advice on places to go and things to see. My homestay was nearby (about 10-15 minute walk) and the family was very nice and welcoming. There were 10-12 other students staying there and we all quickly became friends. The food was simple, but good and I felt safe eating salads and other raw fruits/veggies because they only used bottled water. A friend of mine went to another school and stayed at another place. She paid almost double and didn't get any meals. Antigua Plaza is a great bargain and a great experience. I hope I can go back again in the future.
Evaluation from Jan1986:
I studied Spanish for a week at the school of Ana. The teachers at the school are professionals in what they do and teaching element is fun and interactive. Next year I'll probably go back to study again Spanish at the same school!
Evaluation from toujoursencolere:
A lovely place to learn Spanish! Ana is extremely helpful with organising activities, and my teacher Alma was excellent. I feel like I learned so much in my one week at the school, and would definitely go back!
Evaluation from olegtravel:
We stayed in Antigua for 3 weeks to learn Spanish in January 2015 and we liked Antigua Plaza Spanish School a lot. The school is small and the atmosphere is very friendly. The teachers are professional and attentive to needs of every student. It was great experience to stay in the garden learning language and listening to birds. Ana, the owner of the school, is a talented administrator and ready to help with any questions regarding visit to Guatemala. We highly recommend this school. Hope to come to the school again.
Evaluation from sisterceleste:
I enjoyed the one-on-one interaction with my Spanish teacher. The school has very prepared teachers with a passion to share their knowledge. Because of individual teachers/students, the particular needs of the student can be addressed ... The facilities were small, but adequate ... Each of the teachers and the Director were very personable ... The price for classes was very reasonable ... There was opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities which were both educational and fun for all ... My living situation was adequate, and the family members were very nice to me. They appreciated that I, as a religious, decided to live with them ...
Evaluation from Timmydj:
I spent a week in June 2015 at Antigua plaza. I knew no Spanish before I started at the school and I had a very good basic understanding of the language and learnt a lot of basic conversation grammar which has helped me a lot on my travels through Central America. The school is set in nice quite gardens and the teachers are overly helpful. I did the home stay with violetta and racial and they were fantastic. I highly recommend this school! Thanks Ana
Evaluation from l1onhart:
I've attended Antigua Plaza in 2014 for two weeks and enjoyed it so much I decided to come back in 2015 and attended for a month or so. Both times were great. Ana, the owner of the school, was very prompt in answering my emails and every question I had. Trust me, I asked a bunch of questions and she was very patient with me. I arranged just about everything through Ana and Antigua plaza. I arranged airport pickup for the both times I went to Guatemala and it was very easy. I exited the airport and there was a person holding a sign with my name and school name on it and they took me to Antigua, Guatemala where I also arranged a homestay through Antigua Plaza. I had the pleasure to stay with Violeta and family and I cannot say enough good things about them. The food is delicious and the family are always willing to help with anything, whether it be booking a tour or help with your Spanish. They truly are my family in Guatemala and I still stay in contact with them. If you plan to book a homestay, ask to stay with Violeta and you won't regret it. Ana made me feel like family also, always checking up on me and making sure my stay and trip was pleasurable. I had two different teachers during my stay there. I had Elvira in 2014 and she was fun and hilarious. She made learning Spanish a blast. In 2015 I had Gloria. She wasn't a bad teacher but it wasn't as much fun. That was probably more my problem because the second time around I was really trying to hit a lot more grammar points than the previous year where all I really wanted to do was be able to converse. In either case, because the classes are one on one, the program is catered directly to you. They'll work on whatever you want to work on. All in all, I plan to return to Antigua in the future, and when I do, I plan on attending Antigua Plaza and staying with Violeta again.
Evaluation from Obilisk18:
I recently spent a week at this school and it was a great experience. The director, Ana, really went out of her way to find out what activities I was interested in outside of the class, and made arrangements so I was never bored. The homestay set-up with Violeta was wonderful. There were other students staying there, but the conversations almost never lapsed into English. It felt like a real home. That said, I'm not sure how to evaluate the actual lessons. It was my first week learning Spanish and the sheer volume of information was sometimes overwhelming. My teacher, Aura, was super-helpful, and really fun, but I left feeling a little frustrated. That's the only reason this school doesn't get straight 5's and since I chalk it up more to my shortcomings, I'm still happy to recommend it (I play to go back even in a few weeks!).
Evaluation from izazou82:
For my first trip to Guatemala as a solo female traveler, I thought it would be a good idea to start my journey with some Spanish learning. I contacted a few schools, and Ana from Antigua plaza answered me very efficiently and answered all my questions very precisely. It made me feel confident that would be the best school for me in Antigua and I was right. She arranged an airport pick-up for me who brought me directly to my host family (very lovely family with whom I could practice outside of school). The school is next to Antigua's centro and is very close by everything. I was greeted by mi profesora Alma who was just terrific. She was patient and understanding and really tailored a program that responded to my needs and adjusted to my level of Spanish. From that school, I ended up meeting nice other fellow travelers with whom I visited the country after my stay in Antigua. I only have good words about the school and the family and if you must pick a school, to me Antigua Plaza is the best you could wish for!
Evaluation from dennis1200:
I studied at Antigua Plaza for 4 weeks in January 2016 and I can't say enough about what a fabulous place this school is. I registered on this site just so I could write this review! It's small, beautiful, personalized and not only did I learn a ton but I witnessed several other students improve dramatically at the same time. Classes are typically outdoors in a garden setting, quiet and peaceful. The teachers are all excellent; they really thoroughly understand how to teach Spanish, which is not the same as just knowing how to speak Spanish! I had Aura as my teacher who was great, fun, super knowledgeable and always kept things interesting. It was a perfect balance of rigorous grammar review and conversation. I arrived at the same time as two other students, one of whom had zero knowledge of Spanish, but sure enough after four weeks she could hold conversations and understand a great deal of what people were saying. Lesvia and Alma were the other two teachers I got to see working and they did great too. I did a homestay through the school at Violeta's house, which I highly recommend to anybody. The family is super welcoming, patient and encouraging when it comes to helping you learn and practice Spanish. Rafael, hey husband, is also a licensed tour guide with Inguat (the official Guatemalan tourism agency) and is very knowledgeable about the country and in particular the towns nearby. There are typically other people staying at the house - I shared the house with the family and 7 others at one point, but it's a fun, dynamic atmosphere with shared meals most days. There are tons of options for affordable travels in Antigua, visiting other incredible places in this beautiful country. Antigua does have its fair share of tourists, and if you want you can easily speak English and get by. But there are also countless opportunities to practice your Spanish and live like a local. Everything is within 15-20 minutes walking distance in Antigua. My only regret is not being able to stay longer. 2-3 months would be great. If you're looking for a Spanish language school, this is the one! It's not as prominent as many others but the quality is way better and a way better deal to boot. I really can't imagine anything to improve on the program here.
